Every January, Ethiopia celebrates Timkat — the baptism of Jesus — with processions, all-night vigils, and mass baptisms. It's one of the most vivid religious events in the world.
On the eve of Timkat, churches parade their tabots (replicas of the Ark of the Covenant) to a nearby body of water. Priests and crowds keep vigil overnight. At dawn, the water is blessed and the crowd is sprinkled.
Gondar hosts the largest celebration. Addis Ababa and Lalibela are also spectacular.
Modest clothing. Bring a light jacket — January nights are cool.
Injera, tibs, kitfo, and shiro — the dishes you have to try in Ethiopia.
